Exchange 2010 (SBS 2011) not functioning (some services stuck in starting mode)

Problem: After some sort of update, Exchange services stuck in starting and won’t start. Error messages include “Unexpected error Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password. Problem: You get the message Message “You can’t access this shared folder because your organization’s security policies block unauthenticated guest access”. This can happen to both domain users and Azure AD logins (eg Office 365).
