As soon as I close Outlook and restart it, everything is back to its default.<\/p>\n<p>This is caused by installing <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/kb\/3114409\">KB3114409 <\/a>&#8211; it causes Outlook to run in Safe mode, which uses the default settings. Your customizations aren&#8217;t lost, they just aren&#8217;t being used when Outlook is in Safe mode.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft removed the update, so users who haven&#8217;t installed the December updates yet won&#8217;t be affected. Users who are affected have two choices to fix this: uninstall KB3114409 or set a registry key to disable Safe mode.<\/p>\n<p><strong>To set the registry key:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Open the Registry editor by pressing Windows key + R. Type regedit in the Open: field. Then click Ok.<\/li>\n<li>Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\\u200bSoftware\\\u200bMicrosoft\\\u200bOffice\\\u200b14.0\\\u200bOutlook\\\u200bSecurity\\<\/li>\n<li>If any key in the path is missing, you&#8217;ll need to create it. Right click on the last key, choose <strong>New, then Key<\/strong> and type the key name.<\/li>\n<li>Right click on <strong>Security <\/strong>key and choose <strong>New<\/strong>, and then <strong>DWORD <\/strong>Value.<\/li>\n<li>Type <strong>DisableSafeMode<\/strong>, and then press Enter.<\/li>\n<li>Right-click on <strong>DisableSafeMode<\/strong>, and then click Modify.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0In the <strong>Value <\/strong>data box, type 1, and then click OK.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.torontohelpdesk.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/set-key.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-250\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-250\" src=\"http:\/\/www.torontohelpdesk.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/set-key.png\" alt=\"set-key\" width=\"718\" height=\"358\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.torontohelpdesk.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/set-key.png 718w, https:\/\/www.torontohelpdesk.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/set-key-300x150.png 300w, https:\/\/www.torontohelpdesk.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/set-key-644x320.png 644w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 718px) 100vw, 718px\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>If you have 64bit Windows and 32bit Office, also add <strong>DisableSafeMode<\/strong>, Value: 1 to this key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\\u200bSOFTWARE\\\u200bWow6432Node\\\u200bMicrosoft\\\u200bOffice\\\u200b14.0\\\u200bOutlook\\\u200bSecurity\\<\/li>\n<li>Restart Outlook or reboot the computer.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t want to edit the registry, you can use this reg file: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slipstick.com\/doit\/DisableSafeMode.reg\">DisableSafeMode.reg <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.slipstick.com\/doit\/DisableSafeMode-Win64.reg\">DisableSafeMode.reg for Outlook 32 bit on Windows 64-bit <\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Problem: Starting December 9, 2015, Outlook opens only in Safe Mode.
