{"id":169,"date":"2014-09-29T18:22:50","date_gmt":"2014-09-29T18:22:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.torontohelpdesk.ca\/blog\/?p=169"},"modified":"2014-11-28T19:28:04","modified_gmt":"2014-11-28T19:28:04","slug":"bypassing-an-imbedded-windows-8-key","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.torontohelpdesk.ca\/blog\/bypassing-an-imbedded-windows-8-key\/","title":{"rendered":"Bypassing an Embedded Windows 8 Key"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Problem:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>NR tried installing a fresh version of Windows 8 but it, unfortunately, would pull up the old OEM key.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Solution (Taken from <a href=\"http:\/\/answers.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/forum\/windows_8-windows_install\/cannot-install-win-8-oem-version-to-notebook\/559b3bbe-700d-4d89-80c0-ce339c66898f\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>):<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Set your machine to boot in legacy BIOS mode, configure boot order with USB first<\/li>\n<li>Copy your install media to a USB thumbdrive (you&#8217;ll need at least 4GB)<\/li>\n<li>On the thumbdrive go into \\sources<\/li>\n<li>Create a file called PID.txt which contains the following (substitute the X&#8217;s with your product key):\n<ol>\n<li>[PID]<\/li>\n<li>Value=XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Create a file called EI.cfg (that&#8217;s ei not e1 or el). It contains the following:\n<ol>\n<li>[EditionID]<\/li>\n<li>[Channel]<\/li>\n<li>Retail<\/li>\n<li>[VL]<\/li>\n<li>0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>You&#8217;re good to go, install from the USB thumbdrive and you *should* be OK.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Problem: NR tried installing a fresh version of Windows 8 but it, unfortunately, would pull up the old OEM key.
